I’m sampling some gluten free products here and there, but so far I’m not impressed!
My next post will review Amisa Gluten Free Bread Mix, which we trialled the other day. And I’ll be honest about these foods, even if they are awful tasting.

Why I’m Testing Gluten Free Products . . .
Leaky gut = Autoimmune Conditions
There are a lot of potential links between gluten and type 1 diabetes. If you research leaky gut and auto-immunity, you’ll find a wealth of information on how gluten can trigger all kinds of auto-immune conditions. It’s not the only trigger out there, granted. Not by a long shot. You could check out casein too - but no one is taking my cheese away! And probably not my bread either based on what I’ve tasted to date.
And also, as with everything, nothing is conclusive until it’s conclusive. Which it isn’t . . . yet. It’s merely on the radar for most Endocrinologists now and research is ongoing.
So I’m open to it, but I’m in no rush to give it up right now.
Will I ever know if gluten triggered my diabetes? Maybe I will in this lifetime if they keep hammering away with the research.
My Endocrinologist told me - once you have one auto-immune condition, you are 4 x more likely to be diagnosed with others. And then I was. My thyroid anti-bodies sky-rocketed and Hashimotos was my second diagnosis.
However, it’s unlikely a UK Endocrinologist will tell you to steer clear of Gluten unless you have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease or you have a pronounced Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) reaction. More on this below . . .
Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS)
Coeliac disease is also an auto-immune condition. NCGS is basically any other reaction a person has to gluten which is not Coeliac disease, but improves when gluten is removed from their diet.
So, the fact my nose stops running when I stop eating gluten, would likely be classed as NCGS.
Blood Sugar Control
In her email to me, Dr Schwarzbein, Endocrinologist, recommended I eat:
‘gluten free (to avoid sugar spikes from the immune system attacking gluten)’
It could be worth a try.
Children & Gluten
A lot of people in the diabetes community keep their newborns away from gluten containing foods for a minimum of 12 months. Some do this at the instruction of their Endocrinologist and some just because the research on gluten and diabetes is becoming more concrete now. Plus children born to PWD’s are thought to be at higher risk of developing diabetes anyway, without any more spanners being thrown in there.
Potatoes, rice, fruits, starchy veggies, gluten free flours . . . list goes on and on. I guess there is plenty to choose from without gluten.
And who knows, maybe it could go some way towards prevent a (currently) lifelong, chronic and pretty horrible condition.
